Charge descriptor
A charge descriptor is the short line of text a platform sends to your bank so the payment can be labelled on your statement - commonly a billing company's name plus a reference code, not the site's brand. It is a label attached to the transaction, not a separate record.

Where you see it
You meet it twice: named on the checkout or billing help page as the wording that will appear, then again on the statement itself or in a bank app alert when the charge posts.
Why it matters
It explains why a payment you made can look unfamiliar later, and why an unfamiliar line is worth checking against your own receipts before reporting it as fraud. The reverse is also true - a vague descriptor makes a real charge harder to trace back to the platform if you ever need to query it.
